Leadership is action, not position.

To know why to do something is WISDOM.
To know how to do it is SKILL.
To know when to do it is JUDGEMENT.
To strive to do it best is DEDICATION.
To do it for the benefit of others is SERVICE.
To want to help others is COMPASSION.
To do this quietly is HUMILITY.
To get the job done is ACHIEVEMENT.
To inspire and motivate others to do all these things is LEADERSHIP.

This week found me returning to hang out with the leaders of the Wisconsin
Chapter of Meeting Professionals International. They volunteered to give
up a gorgeous sunny Friday in June to explore the potential of their
leadership and I was honored to be a part of it. During our conversation,
we examined the role that self esteem plays in leadership. We all agreed
that the lower our self esteem is, the more difficult it is to delegate
tasks and say "no" to things that we don't have interest or time for. This
leads to feeling overwhelmed, burned out, and even LOWER self esteem!

Do yourself a favor right NOW: jot down a list of accomplishments you've
achieved this year that you are proud of. They might be small things or
huge things or a bit of both. Take a moment to appreciate that you are
AWESOME and that your presence makes a difference on this planet. And by
the way, thanks for reading Ripples every week. I hope they are as good
for you as they are for me!
Peace to you!

It is good to have an end to journey toward;
but it is the journey that matters, in the end.

How you live today
affects all your tomorrows.

Remember that turning down
the wrong road is part of the journey,
and finding the way back
is your challenge.

Remember that if you keep love
close to your heart,
home will never be far away.

There will be expectations not met,
promises lost, tears,
and moments of despair.

Remember, however,
to be grateful for the sunshine
and to find hope in the rainbow.

Remember to laugh from your soul
and always hold on to your dreams.

Last Monday I was honored to help kick off the 1999 Wisconsin 4H Youth
Leadership Conference. I was excited to be around 600 youth from around
the state who were enthusiastic and curious about leadership, not to
mention the 100 adults who give a part of their lives to help these young
people grow into their leadership potential. Did you ever wonder what the
Hs in 4H are? These leaders pledge their:

Heads to clearer thinking,
Hearts to greater loyalty,
Hands for greater service, and
Health for better living.

Sounds like a pretty good pledge for us all, eh? Which one are you going
to work on this week (FIRST WEEK OF SUMMER!)? Enjoy the sunshine and enjoy
today!

[No Pebble, No Ponder this week, just one big Boulder that is worth
reading, I promise! -ptw]

S L O W D A N C E

Have you ever watched kids
On a merry go-round
Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow down
Don't dance so fast
Time is short
The music won't last.

Do you run through each day on the fly?
Whey you ask "How are you?"
Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done,
Do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?
You'd better slow down
don't dance so fast
Time is short
The music won't last

Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow
And in your haste, not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die
'Cause you never had time
To call and say "Hi?"
You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast
Time is short
The music won't last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift...
Thrown away...
Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over.

I am convinced that happiness does not work as a goal or destination.
Happiness happens on the way to something else. When we try to find
happiness it eludes us. But if we are pursuing a passionate goal,
happiness will join us for the ride.

Serving others is a responsibility we have to give back to our community
and to the universe. And it comes with LOTS of benefits too! It seems as
though you cannot help another human without benefitting at the same time!
Try it!
