Ripples #790: Restoring the Broken.
A splash of inspiration
from The Ripples Guy
14 July 2014
PEBBLE:
What do we live for,
if it is not to make life
less difficult for each other?
-George Eliot
BOULDER:
Your job is not to judge.
Your job is not to figure out
if someone deserves something.
Your job is to lift the fallen,
to restore the broken,
and to heal the hurting.
-The Essence of life, shared by Jeremy Haddon in Mossman, Queensland (Australia)
PONDER:
I don’t believe that we have an *obligation* to help every single person we encounter.
I do believe that there is an *opportunity* to help every single person we encounter.
Every. Single. Person.
The lost ones, the frustrated ones, the nice ones and the mean ones. And the magnificent secret that I hesitate to share with you because we took a solemn oath at the last meeting of the “Benevolent Order of Those Who Strive To Be As Nice As Possible to Everyone We Encounter”: the person who benefits the most from all the helping is often YOU! Serving others feels great; it reminds us to be grateful for blessings that we take for granted, and as a bonus it replenishes our “karma credit card” so we can be in great shape to receive help from others just when we need it most.
Just remember that helping works best when it emanates not from a sense of duty or obligation, but instead from a source of joyous opportunity. So keep your eyes and ears open for a friend or colleague or stranger who needs you.
Peace,
Paul

23 Dec 2013
PEBBLE:
Anything that has real and lasting value
is always a gift from within.
-Franz Kafka, shared by Josh in Sheboygan, WI
BOULDER:
A thousand candles
can be lit from a single candle
and the life of the candle
will not be shortened.
Happiness never decreases
by being shared.
-Buddha, shared by Angela in Madison, WI
PONDER:
As many of our Ripplers gather with family and friends to exchange gifts and enjoy each other's company, I want to gently remind us all that in addition to joy and merriment, for some this can be a time of sadness or frustration.
If you or those around you sometimes create unrealistically high expectations, taking a few deep breaths and going with whatever is happening might be a wonderful gift to yourself and those you spend time with this week.
If you don't particularly enjoy this time of year for whatever reason, perhaps you can acknowledge that for other people it IS an important time of year but not one that needs to be a big deal for you. Treat yourself to some quiet time, diving into a book or a movie or a bath or whatever. Gifts to yourself can help you bring your best self to others, and giving to others can infuse a feeling of generosity within that feels as warm as a toasty fire on a cold winter's day.
Happy Christmas and/or
Seasons Greetings and/or
Merry End of 2013!

PEBBLES:
For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains,
but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.
-Nelson Mandela
As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison.
-Nelson Mandela
BOULDERS:
Mr. Mandela was a man whose heart, soul and spirit could not be contained or restrained by racial and economic injustices, metal bars or the burden of hate and revenge.
-Muhammad Ali
He transcended race and class in his personal actions, through his warmth and through his willingness to listen and to empathize with others. He taught us that to respect those with whom we are politically or socially or culturally at odds is not a sign of weakness, but a mark of self-respect.
-Desmond Tutu
PONDER:
Nelson Mandela chose to leave behind 27 years of bitterness when he regained his freedom after almost three decades of imprisonment; a choice that revealed remarkable courage and determination. South Africa was transformed because of his leadership and because he inspired others to collaborate instead of compete with their adversaries. People around the world revere this Nobel Peace Prize winner, and I'm confident he will endure as one of the most respected political leaders of our time. I think unfortunately there have been many missed opportunities to follow his remarkable example. Our reactions to social crises (terrorism, crime, poverty, political unrest, natural disasters, etc.) both at home and abroad might all improve significantly if we more stridently commit to the difficult work of focusing on our shared humanity.
I believe Nelson Mandela would be much less interested in our veneration of him and much more interested in our renewed commitment to magnify our empathy, compassion and the persistent pursuit of peace in both our personal and public lives. I challenge us all to seek concrete ways to honor his passing, whether that be making peace with someone nearby (colleague, neighbor, etc.), working harder to understand the perspective of those who disagree with you, or renewing your determination to accomplish something for the greater good.
Don't just mourn Nelson Mandela;
decide to honor him with change.
Peace,
Paul

PEBBLE:
If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
-Mother Theresa
BOULDER:
Extend to each person,
no matter how trivial the contact,
all the care and kindness and
understanding and love that you can muster,
and do it with no thought of any reward.
Your life will never be the same again.
-Og Mandino
PONDER:
You're busy, I know. You have lots on your plate and you are just juggling all kinds of stuff. And I feel confident that at least some of the STUFF you're juggling involves meeting the needs of others. I get that, I really do.
And.
What if we mustered all the care and kindness and understanding and love as Mr. Mandino describes above, and unleashed it as widely and often as possible. Do everything you can, and see what happens.
Peace!

Ripples #684: Giving to Get!
For our tribe of 31,161 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.
07/03/2012
PEBBLE:
The function of freedom is to free somebody else.
-Maya Angelou, submitted by Kalia in Sebastopol, CA
BOULDER:
There is a wonderful, mythical law of nature
that the three things we crave most in life
happiness, freedom, and peace of mind
are always attained by giving them to someone else.
-Peyton C. March, submitted by Karissa in Sheboygan, WI
PONDER:
Many of us recognize the wisdom of "giving to get" even if we don't always remember to act on it. As those of us here in the USA prepare to celebrate our Independence Day, I invite all of our ripplers to remember that freedom isn't free. Many people made significant contributions and sacrifices so that we might live with many possibilities to choose from.
A good way to honor our own freedom is to spend some time and energy helping others expand *their* possibilities. Keep your eyes out this week for an opportunity to spend a few minutes helping a friend or stranger in need. Your patience and kindness will not only help them; you'll likely notice how much more you recognize and savor your *own* freedom!
Peace,
Paul

giving liberates the soul of the giver.
-Maya Angelou, submitted by Mary in Madison, WI
BOULDER:
I don't think you ever stop giving.
I really don't.
I think it's an on-going process.
And it's not just about
being able to write a check.
It's being able
to touch somebody's life.

PONDER:
As many of us count down the days to Christmas, some people are preparing to gather with family/friends to celebrate holiday traditions. This time of year can be filled with joy and fun adventures AND it can also be a time of stress and frustration.
You may find that the best gifts you can give to yourself and others won't cost you any money: patience, gratitude, kindness, and perhaps most of all, a complete and compassionate acceptance of what is (instead of wishing people or situations are different than they are).

When you do nothing, you feel
overwhelmed and powerless.
But when you get involved,
you feel the sense of
hope and accomplishment
that comes from knowing
you are working
to make things better.
—Pauline R. Kezer
PONDER:
I have enjoyed a crazy busy week of firing up new students at Western
Wyoming Community College, Lakeland College, and Marian University. One of
the core messages I passed on to each group was how important it is to
quickly get involved on campus. Engagement is the quickest way to reduce
fear, make friends, and create deeper meaning; this applies to new students
just getting started at college AND it is great advice for all of us who
seek to have full, enriching lives.
If you want to immediately feel better about yourself and about life in
general, keep your eyes open today for opportunities to lift up a friend,
colleague, classmate, or even a stranger whose path crosses yours by chance.

________
BOULDER
The moment you think only of yourself,
the focus of your whole mind narrows,
and because of this narrow focus,
uncomfortable things can appear huge
and bring you fear, discomfort,

The moment you think of others

may discover an extra set of hands to help you stay afloat.
Yes, you can.

Here in the U.S. last Monday in May is recognized as "Memorial Day" to
honor soldiers killed during wartime. While it is for many of us the
holiday weekend that kicks off summer, most people spend at least a few
minutes thinking about those who sacrificed everything while serving their
country.
I thought this could be a good day to think about sacrifice and how giving
up something in the short term often leads to greater gain. Sacrificing
something to enrich the greater good does not have to result in our death,
nor does it even have to be painful. The right thing can even make us feel
good: donating a few dollars/hours to a community organization, defending
the honor of someone who is unable to speak up for herself, or doing the
right thing even when it is not the easiest or most convenient course of
action. Sacrifice is an opportunity for all of us to participate fully in
society, and to become our full, best selves in the process.

Paul

You matter a great deal to the people around you. You impact them even when you aren't noticing. Even when they aren't noticing. That doesn't mean you have to be perfect; you don't even have to be amazing all the time. You just need to be aware; aware that you make a difference.
A special hello to the remarkable Leadership Safari Guides at Central Michigan University. I hope your journey is as fun as our awesome day last week!

Happiness is the hunger to give...

BOULDER
A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise woman.
"I've been thinking," he said, "I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone."

Service comes in all shapes and sizes.
It can be the traditional philanthropy where we choose a person or organization in need and give time or money. It can also be part of our job to help customers, employees, co-workers, or others. Service can even be the way we choose to interact with each person we encounter. When you put on your "community service" or "work" hats on, I suspect it is fairly easy for you to be kind, generous, warm, and giving. What about the other opportunities in your daily life to serve others? Standing in line, driving, shopping, or just walking along: if you stay present and make eye contact with those around you, it is possible you will identify someone who needs a quick favor, a kind word, or just a warm smile. Please take extra care this week to notice opportunities to serve!
Please send some good energy my way as I make my first "beta stop" on the uROCK! Roadtrip. I'll visit Milwaukee this Wednesday to present a workshop for a business networking group AND stopping at a coffee shop afterwards for a "Ripples MeetUp" (contact me if you're in the Milwaukee area and interested in more info!). I'll be sharing my experiences with photos, texts, and blogs so tune in to http://uROCKroadtrip.com or make sure you're connected to me on Facebook, LinkedIn, and/or Twitter.

Hey, you. Yes, you... I need to borrow one smile, pretty please with sugar on top?
I intend to gather a big pile of smiling faces with encouraging signs to help unleash ripples of compassion and kindness on the upcoming uROCK! roadtrip. The collection won't be complete without your smile!
Please write a note to someone in your life who needs some encouragement, or to a group who could use a lift (soldiers, elderly, abuse victims, people facing big challenges with employment, health, finances, self confidence, etc.). Then use a camera, a web cam, or your cell phone to snap a photo of your smiling face holding the sign and mail it to me so I can post it on the website. You can see examples here:
http://gallery.me.com/ptsayshi#100008
You can upload the photo directly at the website above OR simply send it to me and I'll post it.
I know you are busy AND I want you to know that those who have submitted a smile already report it was QUICKER and MORE MEANINGFUL than they expected. Are you in?

When other people make mistakes, we seek justice.

The act of compassion begins with full attention,
just as rapport does.
You have to really see the person.
If you see the person, then naturally, empathy arises.
If you tune into the other person, you feel with them.
If empathy arises, and if that person is in dire need,
then empathic concern can come.
You want to help them, and then that begins a compassionate act.
So I'd say that compassion begins with attention.
-Daniel Goleman

While working on an exciting adventure that I will share more about in a few days,
I came across some powerful definitions of compassion:
Compassion: understanding without judgment.
http://www.timolehtinen.com/articles/psyche-glossary/
Compassion: the desire to help when a need is discovered.
http://www.godonthe.net/dictionary/c.html
Compassion: profound human emotion prompted by the pain of others.
More vigorous than empathy, the feeling commonly gives rise
to an active desire to alleviate another's suffering.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compassion
Perhaps you can spend some time today paying attention to those around you to see who might need your compassion. You may find that after feeling compassion, a desire will grow to ACT on it to help someone else. If you are brave, generous, and daring, you might even take the next step....

Here in the U.S. we have (finally!) finished the exhilarating and exhausting process of selecting our next president and it is (finally!) time to recognize that our differences don't have to divide us. As I told my Facebook Friends, I believe "if blue celebrates humbly & red responds respectfully, the significance of this moment will emerge."
I hope you can expend extra energy this week to ACKNOWLEDGE DIFFERENCES between you and someone you argue/disagree/fight with often. With enough patience, practice, and persistence, you may discover that differences are not necessarily bad; they can even help make for more satisfying connections, more creative solutions, and a far more enriching life.

This week some remarkable student leaders at Michigan Tech. University completely freaked me out and I may not recover.
Ever.
MTU's 2008 Summer Reading Challenge selection is "Three Cups of Tea," by Greg Mortenson, a mountain climber who got lost on an expedition and stumbled into his life's mission of building schools in remote Pakistan & Afghanistan. Just before lunch on the day I spent with them, I mentioned Greg's fundraising struggles and challenged them to raise as much money as they could in over their lunch break.
I was confident that collecting a few hundred dollars would create a good sense of "look what we can do when we focus our energy." When we re-assembled after lunch, a plastic container filled with cash was handed to me and when it was all counted and sorted they had transformed a lunch hour challenge into $2,915.62. In just a few hours!!
What struck me most about this remarkable feat was how excited they were by their accomplishment. After spending many long days of training and preparation, they honestly had looked a little worn out when I initially greeted them in the morning. It appeared this profound act of ADDING LIFE to others re-energized their own spirits even while they were unselfishly helping others. How Ripply, indeed, to re-discover that helping others has great benefit to the helper too.
I am stealing a word someone just used on my Facebook wall: Michigan Tech students are FRICKMAZING and I hope you can let them inspire you to take some action this week to ADD LIFE to others.
