Without good communication, a relationship is merely
a hollow vessel carrying you along on a frustrating journey
fraught with the perils of confusion, projection, and misunderstanding.
-Cherie Carter-Scott, submitted by Linda H, Lincoln NE

__BOULDER ______________________________________

Conversation is a sharing of stories.
We half listen and wait
for the moment we can jump in.
We vaguely pay attention
to the person speaking,
seeing where our piece will fit.
While waiting,
we forget to really listen.
When we forget to truly listen,
we miss things.
-Sarah Morrison, submitted by Heather S., Beaumont TX

I dare you to choose a conversation you know you will have today and commit right now to listen more carefully and more completely than you normally do. Whether your conversation partner is a colleague, supervisor, classmate, friend, family member, neighbor, or stranger, I suspect that both of you will notice the difference. Don't just wait for your turn to talk; instead, become obsessed with what the other person is saying.

Are you listening?

Peace,
Paul
p.s. I'm sorry I passed over a mention of Passover last week...Shalom!

It takes strength to be certain,
It takes courage to have doubts.
It takes strength to fit in,
It takes courage to stand out.
It takes strength to share a friend's pain,
It takes courage to feel your own pain.
It takes strength to hide your own pain,
It takes courage to show it and deal with it.
It takes strength to stand guard,
It takes courage to let down your guard.
It takes strength to conquer,
It takes courage to surrender.
It takes strength to endure abuse,
It takes courage to stop it.
It takes strength to stand alone,
It takes courage to lean on a friend.
It takes strength to love,
It takes courage to beloved.
It takes strength to survive,
It takes courage to live.

This week included a visit to the Oregon Governor's Conference on Tourism in Portland and a quick flight back to Wisconsin for RFW's Rehabilitation & Transition Conference. It may seem the tourism industry and those who serve people with disabilities may not have much in common, but I quickly learned that both groups struggle with how do manage a most precious and rare commodity: TIME!

Indeed all of us are running around like rabbits, hoping to accomplish lots in school, work, and/or life. People who attend my presentations on time management are often seeking the secrets of saving time and multitasking and eternally organized desks. While I am happy to share a few tips, the most valuable truth I can share is that there are not really secrets and time management is not about cramming a bunch of stuff into your day so you can check items off a list. Instead, it is about slowing down, figuring out what is most important at this point in your life and making sure it gets tended to.

Choose one neglected task that is on your plate right now and DO IT! It could be an annoying chore, checking in with a friend, or maybe taking 10 minutes for a fast paced walk to jump start your exercise program. You don't need to think about it, or plan it, or worry about it. You just need to DO IT!

Oh, and don't forget your taxes are do tomorrow too.

Peace,
Paul

When evil men plot, good men plan.
When evil men bomb and burn,
good men must build and bind.
When evil men shout words of hatred,
good men must commit themselves

This week included a beautiful drive over to Fond du Lac for a leadership conference at Marian College. We bonded over Facebook, time & stress management, and lots of leadership strategies to help build strong communities.

The night before the conference, I watched several television programs that marked the 40th anniversary of Dr. King's murder and was reminded of how passionately and tirelessly he worked to build a community where we all could prosper.

I wonder if you could take some action this week to build community? Get involved in a neighborhood group, take some time to expand your relationships at work or school, or just take a minute to seek out someone you think makes your community better and say THANKS!

Peace,
Paul
p.s. Dr. King, we have not forgotten about your dream; we are still working on it!
