Ripples v1.15: RIPPLES OF PEACE..…

Ripples, version 1.15 [4/26/99] An electronic postcard from Stone Soup

Peace is not
something you WISH for.

Peace is
something you MAKE,
something you DO,
something you ARE
something you GIVE AWAY.

Original Source: Robert Fulghum (submitted by me--not due to a lack of
wonderful submissions--I just thought we needed to think about PEACE this
week!)

This week gave me the opportunity to spend time with folks from the
Illinois Dept on Aging in Chicago, Bloomington, and Mt. Vernon before
dashing off to Milwaukee to spend a day at Pius XI High School and then an
evening at a leadership retreat for high school students interested in
learning about diversity. In the middle of my travels, I was stunned by
the news from Littleton, Colorado. I think many of us feel completely
helpless as we hear about yet another act of unthinkable violence. Add to
that the daily horror stories from Kosovo, and it just seems unbearable.

While these problems may seem overwhelming, I am convinced we can bring
about peace in the world by creating peace in our own lives. A simple yet
powerful response to the acts in Kosovo and Littleton: make peace with
someone in your life. Whether it is a family member, coworker, neighbor,
classmate, or former friend, your efforts will create ripples of peace that
will reach Littleton, Kosovo, Ireland, the Middle East, and everywhere that
peace needs to be.

Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.

This week I spent a few days with some energizing folks from NIRSA
(National Intramural-Recreational Sports Assn) while they had their annual
conference in Milwaukee. As I interacted with thousands of professionals
who make their living helping people to play, I was reminded of the paradox
many of us "professional helpers" face: we work so hard (too hard?) to
improve the lives of others that we often drain all the lifeforce out of
ourselves. Remember the best way to teach self-care skills is to PRACTICE
self care skills! ASSIGNMENT: Instead of telling someone how to get more
out of life, just SHOW them by doing something really fun this week (today?
right now?).

Peace, and keep sending me those awesome Ripples!

No one will ever
love you
for your work
or accomplishments.

People will
love you
for the way
you make them feel.

This week I had the honor of delivering a keynote address to the National
Conference on Student Services in Orlando, Florida. It was an honor to be
asked to keynote, and it was fabulous to be in Orlando! As we struggled to
identify the ideal outcomes of our leadership experiences, a common word
surfaced: RESPECT. We hope in our leading and managing and moving through
life to gain the RESPECT of those around us. And just how do you earn
respect? I suspect the best way to start acquiring respect is to GIVE
respect in ample amounts. Is there someone in your life from whom you want
more respect? What can you do this week to GIVE them some respect they
deserve (or perhaps will someday deserve?).

Enjoy today, and send me Ripples!

BOULDER ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

To change your way of THINKING is to move great, huge trunks around in the attic.
To change your way of ACTING is to push toothpaste back into the tube.
To change your way of FEELING is to take a great, irretrievable leap of hope into the dark void.
To change means to develop and grow.
And to develop and grow you have to:
move the trunk,
push the paste,
and leap.
If you don't change, develop, grow
You lie in the muck down in the dark hole."

I didn't have any workshops this week, as this was my last week before a
delightfully CRAZY 6 weeks. With this beautiful Easter Sun shining down,
my plan was to go for a walk and see what bubbles up inside to share with
you. But you know what? That will be a message for ME and not for YOU!
So do yourself a favor and get outside today and see what message
God/Universe/Nature/You (isn't it all the same?) is trying to send you. If
anything really neat pops up, let me know and I'll share a few in next
week's ripples.

Peace to you! -ptw
