If there is light in the soul,
There will be beauty in the person.
If there is beauty in the person,
There will be harmony in the house.
If there is harmony in the house,
There will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation,
There will be peace in the world.

I finished my spring speaking tour with a three-day adventure in LaCrosse,
Wisconsin to be a part of the annual conference for the National
Association of College and University Residence Halls. I had the honor of
hearing a fellow speaker, Kathy Humphrey, give a transformational address
that is STILL bouncing around my head and my heart. As she spoke about the
SOUL of leadership, Kathy had us at one point chanting "It's in the
KNOWING, It's in the BEING, It's in the DOING" and then she artfully
expanded those points into the heart (and soul!) of her speech. I hope
you'll take a moment to think about YOUR leadership style. Which of these
can you work on this week?
I have so many more stories to tell you about this last two weeks of
speaking, but I have all summer to share little tidbits so I'll say Happy
Memorial Day!

I'm sending out a quick Ripples from Cable, Wisconsin as I take a break
from a three day retreat with the RAs from UW-River Falls (Sorry for the
delay--Carole and Vicki had to drive 40 miles to get the necessary
equipment to send this out from the middle of the north woods!).
Last night after watching a video about the Seattle Fish Company (a wild
place to work--they throw fish and yell and have lots of fun!), we were
having an awesome discussion about how to put fun into our lives. One of
the principles they use at the Seattle Fish Company is "Choose Your
Attitude" and we all agreed that we too often let CIRCUMSTANCES or OTHER
PEOPLE decide what mood we should be in. Remember that YOU get to decide
what attitude to have and whether or not today is going to be a good one.
It is, of course, perfectly okay to have some poopy days. Just remember
that YOU choose!
Have a good week!
Peace,
Paul

Ripples v1.18: RIPPLES OF JOY

Walk slowly, speak sweetly, and hug tightly.
These three things are what makes life amazing.

JOY is what we are,
not what we must get.
JOY is the realization that all we want
or need in life has been etched into our souls.
JOY helps us see not what we are "going through,"
but what we are "growing to" --
a greater sense of understanding, accomplishment,
and enlightenment.
JOY reveals to us the calm
at the end of the storm,
the peace that surpasses
the momentary happiness of pleasure.
If we keep our mind centered on joy,
JOY becomes a state of mind.

When my sister, Mia, graduated from college in 1990, we took a trip from
Washington D.C. to Daytona Beach. Our plan was to drive all night, sleep
all day in the sun at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and then drive all night
again to arrive in Daytona on the second day. Well, we never made it past
South Carolina because when we arrived in Myrtle Beach the sun was rising
out of a dark green sea into a perfect blue sky. The salty smell sealed
our fate... we ended up spending several nights in a cheap hotel (sand in
the bed and everything) and camping in the state park right on the ocean.
Mia then went on a search for her ideal career path that over several years
took her from Massachusetts to the Dominican Republic to Alaska doing whale
research. Somewhere on that journey, she made the same realization that we
had on our 1990 adventure: The journey WAS her career path.
Well, I'm headed to Florida to be with my sister again. I think we are
going to make it this time, because she is graduating to become Dr. Mia
Wesselmann, Veterinarian! As I spend some time celebrating this milestone
in her path, I hope you will spend a moment congratulating yourself for
being on your Path.
And congrats to all those Ripples readers who are graduating! [May I
suggest a trip to Myrtle Beach?]-ptw

"Reflections Of A Mother"
I gave you life, but cannot live it for you.
I can give you directions, but I cannot be there to lead you.
I can take you to church, but I cannot make you believe.
I can teach you right from wrong, but I cannot always decide for you.
I can buy you beautiful clothes, but I cannot make you beautiful inside.
I can offer you advice, but I cannot accept it for you.
I can give you love, but I cannot force it upon you.
I can teach you to share, but I cannot make you unselfish.
I can teach you respect, but I cannot force you to show honor.
I can advise you about friends, but cannot choose them for you.
I can advise you about sex, but I cannot keep you pure.
I can tell you about alcohol & drugs, but I can't say "No" for you.
I can tell you about lofty goals, but I can't achieve them for you.
I can teach you about kindness, but I can't force you to be gracious
I can pray for you, but I cannot make you walk with God.
I can tell you how to live, but I cannot give you eternal life.
I can love you with unconditional love all of my life... and I will.

Do you ever notice that is the "in between" times that sometimes make all
the difference? It was another big travel week for me, and I spent some
time doing several presentations at two of my favorite places: Cardinal
Stritch University and University of Wisconsin - River Falls. While I
enjoyed the many presentations and felt good about the work, the magic for
me came when I was having lunch with a group of students at Chaz' favorite
cafe and hanging out with the staff at Carole's house for a day. The chit
chat reminded me of the joy to work within an organization where I see the
same folks everyday. I love my job with all the adventures and travel, but
sometimes it is nice to just sit and chat and see where it takes you.
Won't you take some time today to hang out with someone at work or school
and enjoy the conversation? ENJOY!
Peace to you,
Paul

Ripples v1.16: Ripples of LIFE
Ripples, version 1.16 [5/2/99] An electronic postcard from Stone Soup Seminars
PEBBLE ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.
Life is a beauty, admire it.
Life is bliss, taste it.
Life is a dream, realize it.
Life is a challenge, meet it.
Life is a duty, complete it.
Life is a game, play it.
Life is costly, care for it.
Life is wealth, keep it.
Life is love, enjoy it.
Life is mystery, know it.
Life is a promise, fulfill it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, accept it.
Life is a tragedy, confront it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.
Life is luck, make it.
Life is too precious, do not destroy it.
Life is life, fight for it!

Whew! Another vocally-challenging week has passed. In addition to another
workshop for 911 dispatchers and a college student senate banquet keynote,
I spent an AMAZING day with 350 students from 10 Sheboygan County
(Wisconsin) high schools at a very special conference on diversity. The
title of the event was "Opening our Minds, Opening our Hearts" and it was
my job to help open THEIR minds and hearts with three speeches and three
workshops.
By the end of the day it was MY head and heart that were filled with new
thoughts and emotions about today's youth. These bright young minds were
incredibly respectful and had lots of questions about why our society
doesn't seem to celebrate differences. They were able to translate the
awful experiences of Littleton, Colorado and Matthew Sheppard's violent
death in Laramie, Wyoming into urgent cries for diversity education.
I had walked into the auditorium wondering if they could accept someone who
was really "different" and I walked out wondering why I had been nervous at
all! GOOD NEWS for the future of our country: I have seen our new leaders
and they are filled with Life!
Peace to you, and thank you for your many positive words about last week's
Ripples!
