We are all lumps of clay and the final work produced
depends on how we choose to sculpt ourselves.

When you are inspired by some great purpose,
some extraordinary project,
all your thoughts break their bonds;
your mind transcends limitations,
your consciousness expands in every direction,
and you find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world.
Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive,
and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far
than you ever dreamed yourself to be.

This fall as I developed a new presentation on the Archeology of
Passion, I began experimenting with a "formula" for passion:

( p + a ) * e2 [purpose and action combined in an enriching environment]

The first component is cultivating PURPOSE. I believe that in order
ignite our passion we must first have a sense of direction in our
lives. Do you have a mission in life? How would you be living your
life differently if you had been given a quest to pursue? Do
something this week to ensure you are living your life on purpose!

Paul

Feeling gratitude and not expressing it
is like wrapping a present and not giving it.

Be thankful that you don't already have everything you desire.
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?
Be thankful when you don't know something,
for it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow.
Be thankful for your limitations,
because they give you opportunities for improvement.
Be thankful for each new challenge,
because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valuable lessons.
Be thankful when you're tired and weary,
because it means you've made a effort.

It's easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who
are also thankful for the setbacks.
Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles,
and they can become your blessings.

After another visit with my buddies at the U.S. Tennis Association
Headquarters in New York, I am wrapping up my fall craziness in
Boston at the 43rd National Conference on Student Services. I am
thankful for the amazing adventures I have had this year, and I am
thankful for the upcoming holiday rest period.

I am also thankful that so many eRipples readers continue to create
so many kinds of ripples toward their co-workers, friends, family,
community, and strangers. I hope we can all take some time this week
to thank the folks who have sent ripples our way AND remember to take
a breath from our busy schedules with some self-care ripples this
weekend (secret scoop: there is a little arthouse film you may want
to see this weekend; it is about a wizard named Harry...it may not be
playing in your town due to its limited release........)

Peace,
Paul

There is only one of you in the world, just one.
And if that is not fulfilled, then something has been lost.

I will not die an unlived life.
I will not live in fear of falling or catching fire.
I choose to inhabit my days
to allow my living to open me,
to make me less afraid,
more accessible,
to loosen my heart until it becomes a wing,
a torch, a promise.
I choose to risk my significance;
to live so that which came to me as seed
goes to the next as blossom
and that which came to me as blossom,
goes on as fruit.

I have just arrived home from an adventurous trip to Kiawah Island,
South Carolina where a few hundred long time eRipples subscribers and
I attended the 2001 U.S. Tennis Association Staff Development
Meeting. Chris Murphy and her crew created another amazing event and
I was especially excited to offer a presentation two years in the
making:
"Life Outside the Lines: Igniting Passion In Yourself and Others"

We'll be exploring a few of the components of PASSION over the next
several weeks here in eRipples, but I dare you to spend a few minutes
this week pondering what makes you passionate and how you can make
room for more PASSION in your life! What really fires you up? Dream
about it this week, and we'll explore it more next week!

Paul

There's no place like hope. -Kobi Yamada

Those whose hope is weak
settle down for comfort or for violence;
those whose hope is strong
see and cherish all signs of new life
and are ready every moment
to help the birth of that
which is ready to be born.

This week I was honored to be a part of a special event honoring the
support staff for Lutheran Social Services from around Wisconsin (and
Michigan's U.P.!). As our time together drew to a close, we spent a
few minutes thinking about hope for our future.

One of the casualties of the recent terrorism is Hope. People around
the country and around the world are beginning to settle for a world
in which terrorism is expected and tolerated. Collectively we unite
to "fight evil," while individually some quietly wonder about
alternatives to violence.

Hope allows us to dream about a world beyond political boundaries,
beyond religious differences, a world where we truly value diversity
over the comfort of "sameness." I dare you to seek the place in your
heart that holds Hope, and to let it grow!

Peace,
Paul
