Ripples #605: Greatest Dreams!
For our tribe of 27,093 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.
Dec 27, 2010
PEBBLE:
Step out of the darkness of your smallest thought
into the brilliance of your greatest dream.
-submitted by Karen, Oak Park IL
BOULDER:
Every great dream
begins with a dreamer.
Always remember,
you have within you the strength,
the patience, and the passion
to reach for the stars to change the world.
-Harriet Tubman, submitted by Crystal, Appleton WI
PONDER:
As we count down the last days of this year and get ready for a new one to
begin, this might be an excellent opportunity to practice dreaming. Let
yourself ponder some new and/or renewed dreams and let them be loud, zany,
technicolor dreams. It doesn't mean you are obligated to transform all of
these dreams into new year's resolutions, AND it could mean that one of your
dreams might just transform your tomorrow.
Peace,
Paul

Ripples #604: Christmas Love!
Ripples #604: Christmas Love!
For our tribe of 27,128 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.
Dec 20, 2010
PEBBLE:
Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas
if you stop opening presents and listen.
-Bobby (age 7), submitted by Kalea, Chico CA
BOULDER:
My idea of Christmas,
whether old-fashioned or modern,
is very simple:
loving others.
Come to think of it,
why do we have to wait
for Christmas to do that?
-Bob Hope
PONDER:
Many of us have a few days off from work/school to celebrate the holidays.
I hope that whatever traditions you choose to honor are filled with fun,
kindness, gratitude, and lots of love!
If you will spend time with others, remember to manage your expectations:
our memories of holidays past are sometimes recorded without the poopy parts
which can cause the present to appear less shiny and happy.
If you spend time alone this time of year, remember that alone doesn't
necessarily mean lonely: I encourage you to create some solo traditions so
you can treat yourself to a special meal, movie, book, etc.
Even if these holidays aren't "yours," I hope you can honor the end of the
calendar year and think about what possibilities may exist for 2011.
Peace,
Paul

Ripples #603: Super Scars!
Ripples #603: Super Scars!
For our tribe of 27,132 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.
Dec 13, 2010
PEBBLE:
Scar tissue is stronger than regular tissue.
Realize the strength, move on.
-Henry Rollins, submitted by Kenny Mauk, Denton TX
BOULDER:
Self acceptance comes from
meeting life's challenges vigorously.
Don't numb yourself
to your trials and difficulties,
nor build mental walls
to exclude pain from your life.
You will find peace not by
trying to escape your problems,
but by confronting them courageously.
You will find peace not in denial,
but in victory.
-J. Donald Walters, submitted by Emily, Columbus OH
PONDER:
We have all faced yucky stuff. All of us. It comes in all shapes and
sizes and durations and depths. As we wind down this calendar year, I hope
you can take a moment to examine your physical and psychic scars and notice
whether you have become stronger, braver, and wiser this year not in spite
of, but because of, the stuff you have faced this year.
And if you are feeling REALLY strong, brave, and wise, perhaps you can let
go some of the yuck even as you embrace the good that came out of it.
Peace,
Paul

Ripples #602: Nice!
For our tribe of 27,158 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.
Dec 6, 2010
PEBBLE:
I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or
think at some point, "If this isn't nice, I don't know what is."
-Kurt Vonnegut, submitted by James, Crawfordville IN
BOULDER:
People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I
think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to
walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even
recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes
of a child -- our own two eyes. All is a miracle.
-Thich Nhat Hanh, submitted by Scott, New York NY
PONDER:
I'm sure that your life isn't perfect right now, and there may be some big
or small annoyances you are dealing with today, but let me ask you this:
What is NICE for you right now?
What teeny miracle is helping make life
a little richer, saner, more bearable?
Savor the NICE in your life, and perhaps spend a minute or two creating
NICE for someone else..
Peace,
Paul

Ripples #601: Tracks!
For our tribe of 27,154 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.
Nov 29, 2010
PEBBLE:
We will be known forever by the tracks we leave.
-Native American Proverb, submitted by Rebecca, Chicago IL
BOULDER:
What you leave behind
is not what is
engraved in monuments,
but what is woven
into the lives of others.
-Pericles, submitted by Ryan, Ashland WI
PONDER:
In a few weeks, I will challenge you to think about how you would like to
shape the upcoming year for yourself and those around you. It might help to
spend some time this week pondering what tracks you have left over the past
year. Recognize the times you were at your most effective in work, school,
relationships, and life; and also think about when you were less effective.
Celebrate the good stuff, and remember that 2011 could provide some new
opportunities to lay some new tracks!

Ripples #600: Giving Thanks!
For our tribe of 27,199 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.
Nov 22, 2010
PEBBLE:
Not what we say about our blessings,
but how we use them,
is the true measure of our thanksgiving.
-W.T. Purkiser, submitted by Janet, Milwaukee WI
BOULDER:
Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.
It turns what we have into enough, and more.
It turns denial into acceptance,
chaos to order, confusion to clarity.
It can turn a meal into a feast,
a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.
Gratitude makes sense of our past,
brings peace for today and
creates a vision for tomorrow.
-Melody Beattie
PONDER:
There is something even more delicious and satisfying than the feast many
of us in the U.S. will devour in a few days: the yummy taste of gratitude.
Please take a moment before the craziness sets in to tell someone who
doesn't know that you are grateful for them.
And just in case YOU don't know, I am deeply grateful for the many fellow
Ripplers who have shared quotes, kind words, and even recruited more Ripples

Ripples #599: Cultivating Knowledge!
Ripples #599: Cultivating Knowledge!
For our tribe of 27,158 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.
Nov 15, 2010
PEBBLE:
Knowledge is like a garden, if it is not cultivated it can not be
harvested.
-African Proverb, submitted by Kalea, Chico CA
BOULDER:
Students must be convinced that changing one's mind in light of the
evidence is not weakness: Changing one's mind is the essence of intellectual
growth. ...If we can create environments in which [children] can safely have
small epiphanies in the light of evidence, they will be motivated to share
those lessons.
-Thomas W. Martin, submitted by Terry, Franklin WI
PONDER:
We have more information available to us than ever before. Sometimes,
however, we filter out the information that challenges what we believe and
"know" because it is easier to focus on the information that is congruent
with our current world view. We like saying, "See, I'm right!" even if
there is significant evidence to the contrary.
Perhaps you can keep your eyes and ears open this week for a new way of
"knowing" something, and seek the courage to seriously consider whether it
is time to plow under the "old way" and let it be fertilizer for the new.
[Of course I am not suggesting you toss out everything. Just ponder the
last year to ensure you have shifted at least one way you think, feel, or
"know" something.]
Peace,
Paul

Ripples #598: Do What You Do!
For our tribe of 27,024 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.
Nov 8, 2010
PEBBLE:
Be aware of what is in you.
Announce it, pronounce it,
produce it and give birth to it.
-Meister Eckhart, submitted by Terry, Oak Creek WI
BOULDER:
.....If we truly believe
in what we are doing,
we can move mountains,
we can change the world...
So, do what you do, whatever it is...
because without you,
who is going to make the signs,
or write the book,

BOULDER:
"[This was not a rally] to suggest that times
are not hard and we have nothing to fear;
they are, and we do.
But we live in hard times, not end times,
and we can have animus and not be enemies."
"Most Americans don't live their lives solely as Democrats or Republicans
or conservatives or liberals. Most Americans live their lives as if they're
just a little bit late for something they have to do. Often it's something
they do not want to do, but they do it. Impossible things get done every day
that are only made possible by the little, reasonable compromises."

COOLING DOWN the rhetoric and
WARMING UP the teamwork.

BOULDER:
There is no joy like the joy

There is no laughter like the laughter

Today is National Coming Out Day, created in 1988 to encourage gay people
to take their next steps in speaking their truth to themselves, family and
friends, and the wider community. When LGBT people come out, it is an
affirmation of our ability to love and a statement about our quest to find
love and acceptance in a society that still struggles significantly with
issues around minority sexual orientation and gender identity. National
Coming Out Day was created within the LGBT community, but I think everyone
can participate.
Unleashing your spirit is about celebrating the fact that YOU are an
indispensable part of this world and regardless of your orientation or how
unkindly you are treated by others, this world NEEDS your best self and your
unique contributions. I hope you can celebrate today by UNLEASHING YOUR
SPIRIT and encouraging others to do the same.

Let's all agree to DO SOMETHING this week. Take some action, however
small, however insignificant you think it could be. We live in a world
where one person can definitely have an impact, and many people doing their
part can fuel hope, change minds, and improve the world for us all.
Think about it, then DO SOMETHING!

the next best thing

you can do is nothing.

Ripples #592: The Way It Is!
For our tribe of 26,587 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.

PEBBLE:
Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is.
The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.
-source unknown, submitted by Tracy B., Wautoma WI
BOULDER:
I wanted a perfect ending.
Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme,
and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment
and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next.
Delicious ambiguity.
-Gilda Radner, submitted by Emily, Columbus OH
PONDER:
Listen up, fellow control freaks (you know who you are). We can spend so
much energy trying to make things just the way we want them, the way they
are supposed to be. And then we can spend a bunch more energy on
frustration and fear when we realize that we cannot fix everything.
How about we all take a deep breath, relax into the HERE and NOW, and let
the next few moments (or hours or days even) be delicious opportunities to
make the best of the way it is.

PEBBLE:
Aspire to inspire before you expire.
-source unknown, submitted by Heather, Cincinnati OH
BOULDER:
I have never been especially impressed by the heroics of people who are
convinced they are about to change the world. I am more awed by those who
struggle to make one small difference after another.
-Ellen Goodman, submitted by Emily, Columbus OH
PONDER:
Last week while I visited San Luis Obispo to help my good buddies at Cal
Poly kick off their Week of Welcome, I reached my 5,000 friend limit on
Facebook. I had been pondering how I might use this odd milestone to create
some fun Ripples, and I think we've come up with something ripply with a
side of whimsy and a dallop of Woohoo!
We'll be seeking adventurous souls who aspire to inspire by spreading
encouragement, gratitude, happiness, and/or kindness. It involves finding
people kind enough and brave enough to attempt something new. Oh, and it
involves five thousand dollars. Literally. So, are you intrigued? Make sure
you like this page http://www.facebook.com/TheRipplesGuy
(it will be worth joining Facebook if you haven't yet).
Look for an announcement in a few days. Until then, ponder how you might

Ripples #590: Ladder of Success!
For our tribe of 26,100 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.
Sep 13, 2010
PEBBLE:
The ladder of success is best climbed
by stepping on the rungs of opportunity.
-Ayn Rand, submitted by Joycelyn F., Reedsburg WI
BOULDER:
At last the ladder,
Which had been built
Slowly, Slowly,
One hope at a time,
Reached up
To the clouds.
And the dreamer
Began to climb.
-Katherine Berry, submitted by Julie T., Eugene OR
PONDER:
You may not have noticed, but every single day of your life has been about
building your ladder. The joyful days make it easier to climb, the
difficult days make you stronger, and the regular days are opportunities to
keep on climbing up, up, up towards your highest dreams, your highest goals,
your highest and bestest self.
Today is here. Climb if you can, rest if you need to, and enjoy the view!

Ripples #589: Celebrate Today!
For our tribe of 26,130 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.
Sep 6, 2010
PEBBLE:
There are exactly as many special occasions in life
as we choose to celebrate. -Robert Brault
BOULDER:
The value of this day is impossible to measure, for it will never come
again. I do not wish to regret its passing. What I do today is up to me and
no one else. I can use it to good advantage or squander it away. The choice
is mine. I will try and make my day one of: success rather than failure;
satisfaction rather than frustration; joy rather than tears; contentment
rather than worry; and love rather that hate.
-adapted from unknown source, submitted by Dixie S., Valley City ND
PONDER:
Please forgive my brevity, but I must rush outside soon to celebrate today.
Do me a favor and stop reading your emails and join the celebration: run
outside and walk barefoot in the grass or call a friend and make them giggle
or savor a single cookie. Just do something joyful to Celebrate Today!

For our tribe of 25,801 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.
8/30/2010
PEBBLE:
When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.
-Lao Tzu, submitted by Linn W., Milwaukee WI
BOULDER:
There is no growth without change; there is no change without fear or loss;
and there is no loss without pain. Every change involves a loss of some
kind: You must let go of old ways in order to experience the new. We fear
these losses, even if our old ways were self-defeating, because, like a worn
out pair of shoes, they were at least comfortable and familiar.
-Rick Warren, submitted by Rachel K., LaBelle FL
PONDER:
It is holding you back more than you realize. It might be a belief, a
routine, a perspective, a pattern. That was the way it has always been,
that was the way you were taught by your elders. It may have been the right
way AND it might be time for a new way. If the idea of letting it go is
really scary, then perhaps dare yourself just to set it aside for a few
months to see what new possibilities might open up when you clear out the
spaces in your heart, your mind, and/or your schedule which currently hold
"the old way." Gently remind yourself that you can always go back and
retrieve it if "the new way" doesn't produce the results you desire.

Ripples #587: Choose Joy!
For our tribe of 25,813 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.
8/23/2010
PEBBLE: We choose our joys and sorrows long before we experience them.
-Kahlil Gibran, submitted by Rebecca W., Chicago IL
BOULDER: It's a choice you can make: to have joy, to find joy and to
spread joy. -Natalie Portman, submitted by Maureen O., Shawano WI
PONDER: Friday found me in one of my favorite Madison spots: the UW
Arboretum where the UW Medical Foundation Clinic Managers held their annual
retreat. It really was a joy to spend the day with them, and we spent part
of our time together discussing the choices we have in our work and lives.
We don't always get to choose what happens in our day, we don't always get
to choose the people we are around. We can always choose how we respond to
these events and people, and we can choose joy even when that isn't our
first reaction. Anger is the right choice sometimes and so is sadness, and
all the other emotions as well. Just remember that joy is also available to
you, waiting for you to choose her. She can transform any ordinary moment
into a miracle.

-Ralph Waldo Emerson, submitted by Nathalie H., San Antonio TX
PONDER: Many ripplers are preparing to head back to school, hopefully with

-Winston Churchill, submitted by Nick P., NJ
BOULDER:
Leaders must be tough enough to fight, tender enough to cry, human enough
to make mistakes, humble enough to admit them, strong enough to absorb the
pain, and resilient enough to bounce back and keep on moving.
-Jesse Jackson, submitted by Kalea A., Chico CA
PONDER:
Life for me has been crazy and loud lately. Lots of stuff going on, lots
of background noise, lots of "dogs barking" (not Grendel, of course). Some
of you know I'm not shy about extroverting one of my favorite mantras, "Let
It Go!" or "L.I.G." for short.
I've been pondering and loving the Churchill quote in this week's Pebble
for several weeks because it reminds me that being RIGHT about something
doesn't necessarily I should let someone or something linger in my soul if
it is frustrating me. Life is full, life is crazy full, right? So let's
strive this week to move past the barking dogs and focus on the fun stuff.
I'm in. Are you?

Ripples #583: Looking At Love!
Monday, July 26, 2010
The Ripples Project is a tribe of 25,823
who believe tiny actions create big possibilities
PEBBLE:
Love does not consist of gazing at each other
but in looking together in the same direction.
-Antoine de Saint-Exupery, submitted by Linn W., Milwaukee WI
BOULDER:
There are only four questions
of value in life....
What is sacred?
Of what is the spirit made?
What is worth living for, and
what is worth dying for?
The answer to each is the same:
only love.
-Don Juan de Marco (movie), submitted by Dave B, La Crosse WI
PONDER:
I have just returned from a magical weekend in rural western Wisconsin
where my dear friends and super-duper longtime Ripplers Jay and Josh hosted
what many who attended described as the most love-filled wedding they have
ever experienced.
For some of the attendees, it was difficult to understand the grooms'
choice in calling it a wedding since the state of Wisconsin recently passed
a constitutional amendment barring same sex marriage and even recognition of
civil unions. For many, it was their first same-sex wedding. For all of us,
it was a magnificent opportunity to see the love that exists among family,
friends, and neighbors. I've posted several photos on my Facebook page, and
I uploaded the video of my toast if you'd like to sample some of the love.
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=483939&id=698990009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toReJzgM--Y
I hope every person who reads this note gets to experience the powerful
love that evolves when family, friends, and neighbors don't simply "accept"
or "tolerate," but indeed EMBRACE a universal truth: our connectedness is
more sacred than our differences.
Peace,
Paul
P.S. Congrats to Josh & Jay. I will never forget this weekend--ever.

People often ask you, "What's the most embarrassing moment you had in your

When choosing between "right" and "easy" I urge you to remember that the
easier path doesn't always stay easy. Often times when we choose the RIGHT
path it involves some extra effort up front and then later on down the road
we realize that our road is much easier because the hard part is over and
done.
Whether it is a big or small choice, whether it is for work or school or
home or somewhere else, I dare you to ponder your options and seek the right
path even if it requires more effort. No, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE it requires
more effort. You can do it, and you will benefit in the long run.

Here in the U.S. last Monday in May is recognized as "Memorial Day" to
honor soldiers killed during wartime. While it is for many of us the
holiday weekend that kicks off summer, most people spend at least a few
minutes thinking about those who sacrificed everything while serving their
country.
I thought this could be a good day to think about sacrifice and how giving
up something in the short term often leads to greater gain. Sacrificing
something to enrich the greater good does not have to result in our death,
nor does it even have to be painful. The right thing can even make us feel
good: donating a few dollars/hours to a community organization, defending
the honor of someone who is unable to speak up for herself, or doing the
right thing even when it is not the easiest or most convenient course of
action. Sacrifice is an opportunity for all of us to participate fully in
society, and to become our full, best selves in the process.

large, diverse group of people quickly create a powerful feeling of "we are
in this together so let's make magic!" I initially assumed my purpose as
keynote speaker & workshop facilitator was to offer support to those
attempting to create safe environments for lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgendered youth. As I drove home Friday evening, exhausted and
exhilarated, I realized that I had received as much (or more?) support as I
attempted to generate.
Some days we need support, some days we have support to offer. Our growing

acts of kindness; I hope you can enjoy a little of each this week.

I ask Ripplers everywhere to honor Dr. King by donating $10 to a charity
already on the ground in Haiti [http://CharityWatch.org has compiled an
excellent list] and another $10 to a local charity that might be receiving
fewer donations because of the economy and/or the recent focus on Haiti. If
you are comfortable, share which organizations you donated to on our

I know that for some Ripples $20 is a substantial sum of money; I suspect
you know that $10 can make a real difference in a country as poor as Haiti,

these difficult times. It takes only a moment, so please do what you can!

you know that $10 can make a real difference in a country as poor as Haiti,
and $10 to a local charity will help them know they are not forgotten in
these difficult times. It takes only a moment, so please do what you can!
Peace,
Paul

Ripples #555: Owning Our Choices!
Ripples #555: Owning Our Choices!
Monday, Jan 11, 2010
The Ripples Project is a tribe of 23,950
who believe tiny actions create big possibilities
_______
PEBBLE
We have time for whatever we choose to do, so let's own our choices!
-written and submitted by Dr. Mia Cary, Greensboro NC (& my sister!)
________
BOULDER
Every time you make a choice
you are turning the central part of you,
the part that chooses,
into something a little different
than what it was before.
And taking your life as a whole, with all your innumerable choices, you are
slowly turning this central thing either into a heavenly creature or into a
hellish creature.
-C.S. Lewis, submitted by Lisa D. L'Anse MI
_______
PONDER
We are all busy, busy, BUSY! You probably have more on today's to-do list
than you can fit in a week. I know, I get it.
We may not have time to get to everything we WANT to get done. We do,
however, have EXACTLY enough time to get to the most important stuff. We
have to choose what is important and then, as my sister states above in the
pebble: OWN OUR CHOICES! So make choices this week to accomplish much,
appreciate others, and add joy for yourself and those around you.
Peace,
Paul

_______
PEBBLE
Your life is the manifestation of your dream; it is an art.
And you can change your life anytime
if you aren't enjoying the dream.
-Don Miguel Ruiz, submitted by Sharri d.S., Eugene, OR
________
BOULDER
To dream anything that you want to dream.
That's the beauty of the human mind.
To do anything that you want to do.
That is the strength of the human will.
To trust yourself to test your limits.
That is the courage to succeed.
-Bernard Edmonds, submitted by Danielle A., Oshkosh WI

Welcome to a new year, a new decade and an opportunity to create NEW
DREAMS! Whether you are enhancing a long-time dream or starting from
scratch, I encourage you to consider where you would like to end up this
year in terms of finances, fitness, work, school, etc., and then figure out
what you can start doing NOW to ensure you reach your destination.
If you are not into establishing resolutions, that is okay! It is still
worth dreaming a bit so you can consider this year's direction and
destination. And whatever you choose to create for yourself and others, I
hope it includes...
Peace!
Paul
p.s. You may have noticed a different format in the SUBJECT LINE.
Beginning with this issue, I have chosen to shift away from using a "volume
#, issue #" format for identifying each issue and instead will use a single
number that communicates how many issues we have Rippled since January 15,
1999.
