There's more, much more, to Christmas
Than candlelight and cheer;
It's the spirit of sweet friendship
That brightens all year.

For peace, for understanding,
And for goodwill to men!

There is so much STUFF going on right now in your life and in the world. Some of it is really serious which makes it even MORE important that you take time every day to laugh! So, search online for a good joke, call a friend who always makes you giggle, or ask yourself why the chicken crossed the road and let whatever pops up lead to a good belly laugh. After all, a chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion! (source: http://www.jokesclean.com/ )

I hope you can expend extra energy this week to ACKNOWLEDGE DIFFERENCES between you and someone you argue/disagree/fight with often. __PONDER _________________________________

This week some remarkable student leaders at Michigan Tech. University completely freaked me out and I may not recover.

Ever.

MTU's 2008 Summer Reading Challenge selection is "Three Cups of Tea," by Greg Mortenson, a mountain climber who got lost on an expedition and stumbled into his life's mission of building schools in remote Pakistan & Afghanistan. Just before lunch on the day I spent with them, I mentioned Greg's fundraising struggles and challenged them to raise as much money as they could in over their lunch break.

I was confident that collecting a few hundred dollars would create a good sense of "look what we can do when we focus our energy." When we re-assembled after lunch, a plastic container filled with cash was handed to me and when it was all counted and sorted they had transformed a lunch hour challenge into $2,915.62. In just a few hours!!

What struck me most about this remarkable feat was how excited they were by their accomplishment. After spending many long days of training and preparation, they honestly had looked a little worn out when I initially greeted them in the morning. It appeared this profound act of ADDING LIFE to others re-energized their own spirits even while they were unselfishly helping others. How Ripply, indeed, to re-discover that helping others has great benefit to the helper too.

I am stealing a word someone just used on my Facebook wall: Michigan Tech students are FRICKMAZING and I hope you can let them inspire you to take some action this week to ADD LIFE to others.

I had a great week of travels: spending some time with the Family Care unit of Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati and then a day with the Advancement & College Relations folks at St. Olaf College in Minnesota. And the end of July wouldn't be the same without a few hours to fire up the Loaned Executives at the Dane County United Way as they prepare to kick off their fall campaign. I'm in San Diego now but I'll tell you more about that next week.

The Audre Lorde quote above mentions "the threat of their difference" and I am often amazed at how threatened I can feel when initially detecting DIFFERENCE between me and someone I encounter. Whether it is a different political perspective, cultural upbringing, or even a general outlook on life, my first instinct is often to hesitate or even withdraw to the safety of my tribe, the people I have known the longest and I have much in common with. Of course it is so often the case that once I move beyond my initial fear and embrace the challenge of getting to know this WHOLE PERSON who surely has some things in common with me in addition to our differences, we find joy in both the commonalities and the distinctions.

Can you think of someone you cross paths with somewhat regularly that is DIFFERENT than you in some way? What could happen this week if we all agreed to spend a bit more time and energy seeking the JOY in that DIFFERENCE?

Peace,
Paul

I have just finished a most artful week of FRIENDS!

I began my journey with a stop in Illinois to reconnect with a childhood classmate and a brief pause in Indiana for a squeeze from a longtime training colleague (and most excellent hugger!). On Thursday I made some new connections at the Jennings County United Way before heading to Cincinnati for a weekend reunion with grad school buddies and their ebullient families. I finished the weekend bonding with my bestest best bubba. While I have known them all for different lengths of time, I am so honored to call all of these remarkable people my FRIENDS!

This bounty of friendship reminds me that among our most precious resources are the deep and satisfying connections we make with others. Can you take a moment right now to contact a dear friend or two who might enjoying hearing how much you appreciate having them in your life?

Thinking about it is good; actually doing it could be more wondrous and magical than you expect.

flying into San Luis Obispo, CA where I get to connect with a
childhood friend that I have not seen in over 20 years AND I get to
go hiking with some of my Cal Poly buddies who can best be described
with this word/acronym: WOW!

I have spent the past few weeks anticipating the reunion-bonding and
the hiking-bonding and while I am sure I will enjoy both, I know just
what Pooh means about that "moment just before." Anticipation is
basically "pre-savoring" and the enthusiasm I have put into planning
and pondering my upcoming weekend is just as delicious as the Honey
itself--(of course I won't know that for sure until next week!).

Do you have something awesome, something grand, something delicious
coming up soon? Spend a few moments right now anticipating how sweet
it will be!

On Tuesday, I visited a group of HR professionals to explore the possibilities of professional networking. Instead of it being yet another (dreaded) task on their plate, we reframed networking as EFFICIENT (you can get work done while you network), EFFECTIVE (it can help you gain information & ideas), and ENJOYABLE (you can meet cool people to enjoy the moment and explore future opportunities). While I defined networking as building and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships, our theme this week sums it up even better: FEEDING FRIENDLIES!

Could you take a few minutes this week to FEED YOUR FRIENDLIES? A quick email, a long call, or a precious hand written note could be a great "snack" to nourish the connection, or perhaps you need to schedule some quality one-on-one time with someone you have lost contact with. Thinking about it is good, taking action is great.

Speaking of which: I have enjoyed connecting with many of our friendly RIPPLERS over the years, and we continue to experiment with strategies for members of The Ripples Project to interact with each other. As we gradually advance towards 10 years of Ripples and 20,000 active members I want to find some way to bring us together to celebrate. Are you in? I have a few ideas, and would like to hear some of yours....so make sure you have joined one or both of our official RIPPLES networks so we can exchange some ideas in the near future:

LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/e/gis/3117/345B5A3988D1

For some of us, they could serve as a gentle reminder that a bit more of our time, energy and money could flow out into the universe to serve the larger community. For others, the pebbles and boulder might acknowledge our current and past efforts in serving the greater good. Whether you need a boost of encouragement, a pat on the back, or a little of both; I hope this week you can plant a tree and know that somewhere in the future a grateful person will enjoy the shade!

This week included a visit to the Oregon Governor's Conference on Tourism in Portland and a quick flight back to Wisconsin for RFW's Rehabilitation & Transition Conference. It may seem the tourism industry and those who serve people with disabilities may not have much in common, but I quickly learned that both groups struggle with how do manage a most precious and rare commodity: TIME!

Indeed all of us are running around like rabbits, hoping to accomplish lots in school, work, and/or life. People who attend my presentations on time management are often seeking the secrets of saving time and multitasking and eternally organized desks. While I am happy to share a few tips, the most valuable truth I can share is that there are not really secrets and time management is not about cramming a bunch of stuff into your day so you can check items off a list. Instead, it is about slowing down, figuring out what is most important at this point in your life and making sure it gets tended to.

Choose one neglected task that is on your plate right now and DO IT! It could be an annoying chore, checking in with a friend, or maybe taking 10 minutes for a fast paced walk to jump start your exercise program. You don't need to think about it, or plan it, or worry about it. You just need to DO IT!

Oh, and don't forget your taxes are do tomorrow too.

Paul

If you (or someone you know) feels discouraged lately, facing another set back or discovering yet another obstacle, you know it can be tempting to just sigh and give up. And sometimes it is challenging to remain optimistic when more bad news arrives (even motivational speakers sometimes want to punch a wall or curl up in a ball and ignore the sunshine!).

The quotes above remind us that there is hope and that while things may get yucky at times, there are other times when good things happen, when the RIGHT thing happens, when the BEST thing happens!

Maybe you can practice being just a little more optimist this week, or just today, or heck for even five minutes. It might help you, it might help those around you; it might even change the world.

Even though some people attend these kinds of presentations with the hopes of learning about some secret to managing their crazy lives, most are not surprised to remember and re-learn that it is mostly about the basics: taking time to breathe, connecting with others, exercising your body and your soul, creating quiet time to escape the craziness of your life, and letting go of the yucky stuff that inevitably builds up over time.

Always remember to forget
The troubles that passed away.
But never forget to remember
The blessings that come each day.
-Irish Blessing

Besides honoring St. Patrick's Day today, this week is filled
with opportunities to celebrate with the arrival of spring and Easter too.
I hope you can spend a few moments today forgetting about past troubles,
and a few moments remembering the good stuff in your life.

Celebrate that good stuff and those around you might want to join in!
Happy St. Patrick's Day, Happy Spring, Happy Easter,
and just plain ole' HAPPY TODAY!

Peace,
Paul

I am amazed at the beauty that materializes
when laughter and/or creativity sparks

Please forgive my inability to select just one pebble and one boulder this week; all four of these quotes were just so, well, CREATIVE! I'll keep this ponder short so we stick to the important Ripply rule: readable in one minute or less.

Just make sure you spend some time this week choosing a task or assignment or project to use some CREATIVITY that will increase your success and increase the fun you have working on it!

Kindness is not only Ripply, it is magnetic!!

A few weeks ago I asked Ripplers to send inspirational magnets to decorate my front door. I received several really great ones! I added a couple myself, and the end result was just what I was seeking: an inspirational and indeed Ripply entrance to my home. The unexpected bonus treat is that I get to think of YOU every time I come home! Thanks to those of you who sent magnets, and to all of you who over the past 10 years have shared inspirational quotes and kind words via email. I treasure each one!

I am attempting to attach a photo to this week's issue so you can see the door. I also uploaded a high resolution to Flickr in case you want to be able to READ each magnet:

p.s. My apologies for forgetting WHO submitted these quotes....I already had them on the door when I brainstormed using them as this week's Ripples quotes!

Choose a career you love,
give it the best there is in you,
seize your opportunities, and

I challenged both groups to take action on information and ideas they gained from their meetings, and I challenge YOU to take some action too! What quick steps could you take right now that will help you ACHIEVE something useful in school, work, or life?

On your mark,
get set,
ACHIEVE!

I do hope you can spend a few minutes this week sharing your LOVE with someone else. We usually think of Valentine's Day as a chance to acknowledge romantic love, but there are so many other kinds of love to share: friendship love, familial love, or even universal love of humanity! So whether it is a significant other or best friend or sibling or neighbor or the person in the drive thru window, be sure to HONOR LOVE this week by giving it away!

Speaking of sharing love, I wonder if you have any inspirational magnets that you might share with me? I have a metal front door and want to cover it with inspirational magnets. I was going to purchase a bunch and then thought maybe some of you would have ones that have inspired you and yet you are ready to pass along. I promise share a picture of the door once it is filled up, and I will pass the magnets on to someone else when I'm sufficiently inspired!

Peace, and LOVE to you!

Some of you spent Sunday watching the SUPER Bowl (with some SUPER commercials--I loved the talking eTrade baby and the talking Tide To Go stain!); others are preparing to participate in (or at least anticipate) the SUPER Tuesday primaries. Between these monumental occasions, I hope you can pause for a moment to notice that even your everyday regular life can be spectacular, special, and yes, I will use the word one more time: SUPER!

I reminded the remarkable student leaders at Western Oregon University over the weekend that college and indeed life speeds by very quickly and that deep enjoyment can evolve more profoundly from the regular and yet so precious daily activities than from the big, exciting marker events that often fill our memories and photo albums.

I dare you to choose one small routine or habit or chore this week and try very hard to recognize its SUPER power!

Peace,
Paul

P.S. To all of our LDS friends: we are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers!

I have been enjoying the east coast recently, stopping in New Jersey to hang out at Montclair State, Rutgers & Rowan universities and also with the of U.S. Tennis Association Eastern Section up in White Plains NY (welcome to all!!)

In all of these presentations, I was helping participants identify skills and actions that would help them excel in their leadership roles. Sometimes we forget that while certain personality types might be more likely to develop some leadership skills, we can all improve our abilities with practice. This is certainly true with facing adversity. While some people are better at facing difficult situations than others, we can ALL improve since life inevitably hands us all difficulties. Some of you know that I often use a technical term for these sorts of challenges: POOPY STUFF!

If life has pooped on you lately, remember that you have successfully dealt with challenges in the past and whether this particular challenge is a sprint or a marathon, you can do it! It may not always be easy, it may not always be fun, but if you can hang in there and do your best you WILL make it through and you will be stronger, faster, better on the other side! And victory will smell much better than the...well, you get the idea.....

Peace,
Paul

Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve.
You don't have to have a college degree to serve.
You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve.
You don't have to know about Aristotle and Plato to serve ...
You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.
-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., submitted by Allison T., San Luis Obispo CA

Some of us have the day off as the U.S. celebrates Martin Luther King day, and I hope EVERYONE can take a few minutes to notice how many great things are happening, in part because Dr. King's words and actions are still echoing throughout our society.

We are not where we should be in terms of nurturing a diverse society AND we are so much farther along because of powerful voices like Dr. King's.

Celebrate this important day by speaking up for someone else and/or listening carefully to someone who is doing the same!

Paul

I spent some time this week at Iowa State University to help fire up some new and transfer students and then bipped over to hang out with some passionate RAs at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (and I forgot to ask them why the heck there are so many cats running around campus...they could open a cat safari and make some money!).

The presentations I gave were different, but both included messages about embracing the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead in the upcoming semester. I want to tell them (and you!) that while school and work and life all have lots of "need to do" tasks, it is important to your heart and to your soul that you also pursue some "want to do" projects. Carve a few minutes today, or at least an hour this week, to take some "want to" action like talking with someone in a career you have fantasized about or googling a curious topic. Pursuing educational degrees & careers are potentially more rewarding if you find a path for which you have passion. So come alive, Ripplers, COME ALIVE

Paul

Welcome to 2008, and to the beginning of our TENTH YEAR of sending out RIPPLES: YIPPEE!

In addition to taking action this week to ACTUALIZE yourself, I need your help ACTUALIZING our membership. Each December we lose a pile of subscribers because emails expire and people forget to subscribe their new email addresses (or maybe they are finished being Ripply?). This is a great time of year to tell your family and friends about our happy newsletter, so if you could take a minute to forward this issue to just a couple of people that would be most Ripply of you. It would also help if you tell them how long you have been subscribing and why you like it! I am hoping that in our 10th year, we are able to reach 20,000 subscribers!

Thanks, and good luck ACTUALIZING your self in 2008!

Peace,
Paul
