I received an email last week from a Rippler whose mom is facing
significant health challenges and she asked about resources to help the
family face the many unknowns. This was my reply:

"I cannot imagine how difficult this must be for you and your family, and
while I don't have any specific suggestions on resources to 'face the
unknown' I can tell you that right now, in hospital rooms and offices with
layoffs and homes in foreclosures and food pantries and lots of other
corners, there are many people facing the unknown in its various scary and
frustrating and awful forms. It turns out that we have enormous capacity
for bravery and strength and sticking together when times are tough, and
while there might be some books or articles or websites with some nuggets,
the most powerful support you have might be gathering your family and
friends together in a huddle and saying, "this is poopy, this isn't what we
hoped/planned for, this isn't fun, this isn't easy, but WE CAN GET THROUGH
THIS and we can come out on the other side CLOSER, STRONGER, WISER, and
BRAVER."

I needed to gather my tribe this week to help me face some difficulties,
and while they couldn't take away the pain, they did an extraordinary job in
helping me feel loved and cared for. I hope this week you can either be a
hero or find a hero, or both!

Peace,
Paul

My grandfather took me to the fish pond on the farm when I was about seven, and he told me to throw a stone into the water. He told me to watch the circles created by the stone. Then he asked me to think of myself as that stone person. You may create lots of splashes in your life but the waves that come from those splashes will disturb the peace of all your fellow creatures, he said. Remember that you are responsible for what you put in your circle and that circle will also touch many other circles. You will need to live in a way that allows the good that comes from your circle to send the peace of that goodness to others. The splash that comes from anger or jealousy will send those feelings to other circles. You are responsible for both. That was the first time I realized each person creates the inner peace or discord that flows out into the world. We cannot create world peace if we are riddled with inner conflict, hatred, doubt, or anger. We radiate the feelings and thoughts that we hold inside, whether we speak them or not. Whatever is splashing around inside of us is spilling out into the world, creating beauty or discord with all other circles of life. Remember the eternal wisdom: Whatever You Focus On Expands.

On Friday as I prepared to head to the airport for my weekend adventures in Moscow, Idaho, I tweaked my back (and I can still hear my physical therapist gently reminding me that if I had stuck to my back exercises this likely would not have happened--I know, I know!!). I was in for a poopy Friday: a long day of travel via airplane and rental car with a fair amount of pain. And I was worried it would mean a poopy Saturday, when I was supposed to be enthusiastic and inspiring through several presentations at a leadership conference.

It turns out that a good night's sleep, a hot tub soak, some ibuprofen and an infusion of energy from students and staff at the University of Idaho was all I needed to transform a potentially poopy day into an exciting adventure (with much gratitude to Denise, Mitch, & Tricia who ensured I didn't need to carry or lift anything heavy during my visit).

If you are experiencing a poopy day (or poopy week, month, etc.), I trust you will seek the right combination of external support and internal strength so you can eventually pick yourself up, dust yourself off and create something magical for yourself and/or others.

Life is not always easy, eh?

I have heard from several fellow Ripplers lately who are experiencing BIG challenges in their lives: loss of loved ones, major disruptions in work/school/life, and dealing with other "stuff" that makes life rocky. It is heartbreaking to hear how difficult life can be for each of us at times.

As I look over my responses to them, I notice a common phrase that I have used in various forms. While I try to avoid using absolutes like "always" and "never," I stand by these: Life is not always easy, convenient, pretty, or fair; life, however is ALWAYS is worth it. The hard stuff makes us stronger the same way the heavier weights are what make the difference in strength training (many of you have heard me say that I'd do more weight lifting if they weren't so darn heavy--but of course if they were light they wouldn't help me strengthen my muscles!).

Believe me, I have days where I wish all the "rocks" in the bubbling brook of my life could be magically removed. Luckily I have the good sense to remember that so much of my character, my personal strength, and my capacity to help others has grown from dealing with the difficult stuff.

I'm truly sorry if life is extra tough for you right now; I hope you seek good people to support you, calming music to soothe you, and an occasional Dairy Queen treat every now and then is pretty darn awesome too.

Things don't happen when everything is neat and "just so".
Creativity is all about disruption.
The people who tell you that creativity is pain-free are liars.
The people who tell you they've got a plan are liars.
There is no plan. There's just you, God and the need to invent.
And this uncertain world is what most of us
now find ourselves entering, willingly or otherwise.

Sometimes life is more chaotic and uncertain than we would like, and it might lead us to ask, "Is it worth it?"

We all have to find our own answer, but after experiencing a rather chaotic few weeks and wondering that more than once, my highest and bestest self knows only one answer:

Oooooohhhhhhh YES it is worth all the chaos for the rich and delicious life that comes with it.

Seek the support you need this week, and remember to breathe (I promise I'm doing lots of both!).

Every morning, every day, we leave our houses, not knowing if it will be for the last time, and we decide what we'll take with us, what we'll carry: how much integrity, how much truth-telling, how much compassion (in case somebody along the way may need some), how much arrogance, how much anger, how much humor, how much willingness to change or be changed, to grow and to be grown. How much faith and hope, how much love and gratitude; you pack these with your lunch and medications, your date book and your papers. Every day, we gather what we think we'll need, pick up what we love and all that we so far believe, put on our history, shoulder our experience and memory, take inventory of our blessings, and we start walking toward morning.

I can tell from the large volume of "out of office auto-replies" I've been receiving over the past several weeks that many members of our Ripples tribe have embarked on vacation adventures. I thought this week's theme might be an especially fresh metaphor to consider, and I hope you can spend time this week pondering what you carry around with you on a daily basis. Just like your last trip, you may find that you consistently pack way too much of some things that aren't particularly helpful (e.g. jealously, anger, fear) and perhaps forgetting to include some of the really useful treasures that could help make your journey a more exciting adventure (hope, patience, presence).

And whether your travels are literal or metaphorical, I hope yours are filled with joy and learning. Oh, and something else too:

A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise woman.
"I've been thinking," he said, "I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone."

Passion, it lies in all of us, sleeping... waiting...and though unwanted... unbidden... it will stir... open its jaws and howl. It speaks to us... guides us... passion rules us all, and we obey. What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love... the clarity of hatred... and the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion maybe we'd know some kind of peace... but we would be hollow... Empty rooms shuttered and dank. Without passion we'd be truly dead.

In some of my presentations I describe passion as PURPOSE in ACTION, taking place in an enriching ENVIRONMENT.

In order to be successful in any specific endeavor (project, class, job, school, life) You need to have a PURPOSE: a well-defined mission or set of objectives, and you need to set that purpose in motion through ACTION. In order to sustain your passion, that "purpose in action" must take place in the right ENVIRONMENT, a place where you and your purpose can be encouraged, nurtured, and supported.

Perhaps this week you can take a look at your life in general, or maybe one specific project or component of your work/school/life, and examine it to see how well you have defined its PURPOSE, how consistently and effectively you are taking ACTION, and how supportive your environment is. Perhaps you can tweak one or more of the three components and watch your PASSION emit more sparks!

Last week I spent a magical day at a summer camp helping the staff prepare for a summer of fun. I told them about a magnificent morning hike I had taken a few hours earlier that included a stop at a swimming hole from my childhood, complete with a waterful and a deluge of happy memories. The experience was interrupted when I encountered several pieces of litter.

I told them that at first I became indignant at the careless actions of thoughtless hikers until I gently reminded myself that we are all guilty of littering sometimes. It might be an empty water bottle accidentally left on a bench, but it could also be an unkind word or action that interrupts a fellow human being's frustrating day.

We are surrounded by busy people who are struggling to make the best of the challenges on their plate. Choosing to carry the trash back with me even though it wasn't convenient became a meditation on my own litter and how I could be lightening the loads of others simply by making better choices in my words and deeds.

I hope you can spend a moment or two this week thinking about your WORST "unintended litter," and perhaps striving to bring our your BEST by helping someone lighten their load!

Service comes in all shapes and sizes.

It can be the traditional philanthropy where we choose a person or organization in need and give time or money. It can also be part of our job to help customers, employees, co-workers, or others. Service can even be the way we choose to interact with each person we encounter. When you put on your "community service" or "work" hats on, I suspect it is fairly easy for you to be kind, generous, warm, and giving. What about the other opportunities in your daily life to serve others? Standing in line, driving, shopping, or just walking along: if you stay present and make eye contact with those around you, it is possible you will identify someone who needs a quick favor, a kind word, or just a warm smile. Please take extra care this week to notice opportunities to serve!

Please send some good energy my way as I make my first "beta stop" on the uROCK! Roadtrip. I'll visit Milwaukee this Wednesday to present a workshop for a business networking group AND stopping at a coffee shop afterwards for a "Ripples MeetUp" (contact me if you're in the Milwaukee area and interested in more info!). _________
BOULDER
The act of compassion begins with full attention,
just as rapport does.
You have to really see the person.
If you see the person, then naturally, empathy arises.
If you tune into the other person, you feel with them.
If empathy arises, and if that person is in dire need,
then empathic concern can come.
You want to help them, and then that begins a compassionate act.
So I'd say that compassion begins with attention.
-Daniel Goleman

_________
PONDER

While working on an exciting adventure that I will share more about in a few days,
I came across some powerful definitions of compassion:

Compassion: understanding without judgment.
http://www.timolehtinen.com/articles/psyche-glossary/

Compassion: the desire to help when a need is discovered.
http://www.godonthe.net/dictionary/c.html

Compassion: profound human emotion prompted by the pain of others.
More vigorous than empathy, the feeling commonly gives rise
to an active desire to alleviate another's suffering.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compassion

Perhaps you can spend some time today paying attention to those around you to see who might need your compassion. You may find that after feeling compassion, a desire will grow to ACT on it to help someone else. If you are brave, generous, and daring, you might even take the next step....

Like courage or optimism, hope is something that is most useful when it is the hardest to muster---at our darkest moments. Its easy for us to be hopeful when things are going well. We are often awash in hope then, but we don't really need it. I think this is why real hope isn't easy. Hope can be scary, it can be fleeting, it can be challenging. Which also makes hope so valuable.

So have hope!

In some ways, hope is a skill that can improve with practice. One tip: practice taking the long view. In an era of instant messaging, monthly IRA statements, and quarterly earning reports, it is easy to get caught up in measuring success by the day, or the week, or the quarter. Our problems may be serious. They may not improve this year. If we take the long view, however, we can more easily find hope that change will come.

Do what you can this week to seek hope and savor hope.

Peace,
Paul
p.s. Thanks to my best friend Ron who helped me write this week's ponder. He didn't ask for attribution, but I know he wouldn't want me plagiarizing either.

Would you dream with me for a few moments?

Many of you know that a few years ago I covered my car in smiley faces and the phrases "Kindness Ripples," "Peace Ripples," and "Happiness Ripples." Since then I have been pondering what it would be like to drive around the country to hang out with fellow ripplers and see if we could create some powerful waves of inspiration. I think in light of the many challenges that we are currently facing, the time has come to make this dream a reality. As a bonus, it would be a magnificently fun way to say THANKS to many of you for ten years of nurturing The Ripples Project!

This could be as simple as showing up in your city and breaking break at a restaurant with whoever shows up, or it could be as elaborate as planning inspirational presentations and trying to gather a few dozen or a few hundred people together who need a big splash of inspiration.

In order to encourage a "group conversation," I have posted discussion topics on our Facebook & LinkedIn groups (see links below) and I need to hear from you! How could we make this happen? Where should I go? Can you help? If you are not yet a part of one of these online communities, this could be the perfect reason to join one because you'll instantly have access to many connections with the RIPPLES groups there!

Are you in?

Paul

Ladies and gentleman, thank you for joining us on this flight to New Possibilities.

We have been cleared for take off from the rut you have been in, so we need you to buckle your seat belt, allow your arms and legs to wave and jump enthusiastically, and note the emergency exits do not exist on this craft because you won't need them! You are schedule to arrive at a new destination with renewed passion and more energy than when you left your rut because you are excited and a little scared. This is the Way it shall be. Enjoy!

It is time to have that conversation. You know, the one you have been putting off for some time. Iyanla VanSant calls them "fierce conversations" not because they are violent but because they are vital, charged, and dangerous due to an extended build up of emotion while at the same time infused with energetic potential for deeper understanding and increased mutual respect. Take a deep breath, summarize in your head and your heart what you need to communicate, and remember that your conversation is between two flawed human beings who are doing the best s/he can in this crazy, challenging world! Good luck, and let me know how it goes!

Dear Dr. King,
Happy MLK Day to you!
In the forty years since your too early departure, many people have worked creatively and tirelessly to ensure your dream is not deferred or denied. We still have a ways to go, of course (you know how long these journeys take); still, this week our country achieves a most remarkable step when we become the first "majority white" country with a non-white head of state in world history. Ever! We are celebrating with a nationwide day of service to honor you and the many others who have helped us recognize, resist, and resolve injustice.

Even as we face significant challenges, I believe there is a renewed confidence in the possibilities of our country and indeed our planet. We'll keep your Dream in our hearts as we strengthen our faith in ourselves, each other, and a higher power that seems certain to exist.

With a humble heart, I extend to you and everyone: Peace!

Paul
p.s. Everyone can participate in today's Day of Service, even if it means keeping your eye out for a tiny act of generosity to a stranger or acquaintance.
